NDC Polythenes Ltd: company profile
The road to becoming the UK’s leading provider of Pre-packed Polythene building products.
NDC Polythenes was founded in 1996 by a serial DIY sector entrepreneur who identified a gap in the fast growing DIY market for pre-packed, project sized, pieces of polythene.
The business was originally based in Cannock, Staffordshire, sourcing mainly British made product which was cut and packed into the Handi-pak range. This proved to be successful with the business rapidly gaining a leading position with UK DIY retailers.
This continued until 2002 when the next chapter in NDC Polythenes Development began. In that year Sturge Industries Ltd, a successful Midlands based engineering company, looking to diversify, acquired and relocated NDC to Dudley.
Sturge has many years of experience in overseas sourcing and saw the opportunity to outsource the labour intensive packaging operations to low-cost Asian countries. Sturge Industries was excellently placed to undertake this move with links to Asia through the Group Company, Sturge Asia Ltd.
This move enabled NDC Polythenes to move from strength to strength. With reduced costs NDC was able to establish itself as clear market leader in pre-packed polythene products. A position which it still holds today.
Strong growth in the DIY sector through the mid ‘noughties’ saw NDC relocate twice, finally moving to the present location at Old Hill, a 41/2 acre site, near the M5 motorway, on the outskirts of Birmingham.
By the close of the last decade NDC Polythenes had become a manufacturer of polythene products. The growing demand for products made from recycled materials, increasing import costs and growing demand for NDC Products meant that the decision to become a manufacturer was seized upon.
Today based at the Old Hill site NDC Polythenes are a major UK recycler and producer of recycled polythene films. With an Environmental Agency accredited recycling facility, NDC boasts a dedicated polythene recycling hall, extrusion hall and separate conversion department which produces a range of environmentally friendly polythene product.
The mainstay of NDC Polythenes products is PIFA grade and BBA accredited DPM and DPC, as well as a range of protective sheeting.
Despite the many changes in NDC Polythenes operations over the years, one thing has remained constant throughout, that is the fundamental company ethos of providing first class quality building & DIY products with outstanding customer service. These core values are at the heart of NDC and will continue to be the basis for the next phase of development.
